Chronic malnutrition affects almost half of children under 5, although the figure soars in rural and indigenous communities in the interior of the country, the most affected, according to official data.

Of the 16.2 million people living in Guatemala, 59.3% do so in the poverty and 23.4% in extreme poverty, according to official figures, which also place the country in 128th place out of 188 in terms of the Human Development Index, with a Gini index (which measures inequality) of 59 out of 100.
