Santiago de Chile, Nov 14 (EFE) .- The Chilean Government today assessed the decision of the European Union (EU) foreign ministers to begin negotiations to update the agreement of association signed in 2002, an action that will allow "relaunch a common project according to current challenges."

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs highlighted in a statement that the The 2002 agreement has generated great opportunities for growth and economic development, but stressed that now it is "necessary to renew the commitment acquired."

Modernization of the agreement will reflect the evolution of trade, investment and cooperation in the last decade and will allow to include in the new pact issues of the international agenda with a more inclusive view, said the Chilean government.

The new agreement between Chile and the EU will include issues such as the objectives of sustainable development, environment, energy, corporate responsibility, gender and SMEs, among others.

The EU Council on Monday supported the mandate for the European Commission (EC) to start negotiations, which include a free trade agreement with the Chilean authorities.

The first round of work is scheduled for November 16 in Brussels and will be attended by the Chilean deputy minister of Foreign Relations, Edgardo Riveros.
